Silk Road Solos: The Genealogy of a Timeless Genre

2015

Too often, Asian American and Middle Eastern performers are passed over for acting work or cast in stereotypical, reductive roles. With Silk Road Solos we aimed to give performers the chance to tell their own stories, in their own words. The solo show is an act of courage and stamina — to perform one’s story before an audience, alone, is to make oneself uniquely vulnerable. However, that vulnerability also creates opportunities for moments of deep connection between performer and audience.

With Silk Road Solos, we provided solo artists the resources and support necessary to translate personal experiences into theatrical journeys that are courageous, poignant, illuminating, and entertaining.
