On Friday, September 21, 2018, Silk Road Rising's co-founders, Malik Gillani and Jamil Khoury, delivered a program titled, "Debunking Disinformation: Building Cultural Integrity through Storytelling" in Lisbon, Portugal.
The talk was sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in Lisbon and was moderated by Vasco Malta, Deputy Council Director of the Office of the High Commissioner for Migration.
Malta posed a series of questions to Malik and Jamil about art, activism, intellectual inquiry, and the politics of social and cultural change.
The program included a screening of Silk Road Rising's animated short film, The Four Hijabs, co-written by Jamil and Dr. Manal Hamzeh, and Malik's reflections on the Islamic legacies, both historical and metaphorical, of the Iberian Peninsula.
In addition to the U.S. Embassy, the partners for the event were: the High Commission for Migration (ACM), the University of Lisbon’s Faculty of Letters, and Portugal’s Secretary of State for Citizenship and Equality.
