Mainstage Productions

Silk Road Cultural Center has been producing live theatre since 2003. Our productions tell the stories of Pan-Asian, North African, and Muslim peoples and, with but a few exceptions, adhere to a rule that we call “the playwright - protagonist imperative.” This rule stipulates that both the playwright and protagonist of a given play must share the same cultural background (i.e., Korean American playwright/Korean American protagonist, Arab American playwright/Arab American protagonist, etc.).

It is this particular alignment of voices, and the subjectivities it produces, that helps us to be the representation we most want to see:  complex and complicated, multidimensional, often challenging, never siloed, and invariably rooted in family, community, culture, and the blessings and perils of “identity.”

The plays we produce center the experiences of Silk Road peoples while creating space for interchange within and between all cultures. Or as we like to say, “Theatre that is by us, about us, and for all."

We define a mainstage production as a fully produced show performed for ticket-buying audiences a minimum of eighteen times, not including preview performances.
